SaturdayBegins with a hearty gourmet breakfast prepared by Sharie in her kitchen. Breakfast is served between 7:30 & 9:00. The tour will begin at 10:00 by exploring the magnificent beauty of the LONGEST Finger Lake, Cayuga Lake.
Cayuga, meaning boat landing, is 40 miles long, 3.5 miles wide, 435 feet deep and holds 2.5 Trillion gallons of water. It is host to the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge and is home to one of only two islands in the region, Frontenach Island, located at the northern end near the town of Union Springs.
Along this tour you will stop to view the TALLEST Single Drop waterfall east of the Rocky Mountains. At 215 feet high, this waterfall is 33 feet higher than the famed Niagara Falls. You will also enjoy a ride through New York State’s only NATIONAL Forest. After a thoroughly enjoyable lunch at one of Seneca Lakes outstanding wineries, we will continue on and explore this region’s most interestingly shaped lake, Keuka Lake.
Keuka meaning canoe landing is also known as crooked lake because of it’s unusual Y shape. Keuka is the 3rd longest by length and 4th largest by volume. It is 19.6 miles long, 1.9 miles wide, 187 feet deep and holds 390 Billion gallons of water.
Because of it’s unique Y shape, Keuka’s true claim to fame is that it is the only lake in the country, and one of only a few lakes in the world, to flow both north and south. It’s eastern branch flows south to north while the western branch flows north to south.
It is in Hammondsport, at the bottom of this lake, that we will visit The Glenn H. Curtiss Museum, devoted to Hammondsport favorite son, and the "Fastest Man on Earth". Glenn H. Curtiss was an airplane and motorcycle inventor, and in 1907, on his V8 powered Hercules motorcycle, was officially clocked at going 136.3 MPH to earn him the title of fastest man on earth. After the museum, we will make our way over to explore the awesome beauty of Seneca Lake.
Seneca, meaning stony place, is the DEEPEST of the Finger Lakes. It is 38 miles long, 3 miles wide, 618 feet deep and holds 4.2 Trillion gallons of water. It has approximately 50% of all the water in the Finger Lakes.
Because of it’s size, Seneca Lake has been a testing site for submarines, and is an ideal place for the military to test sonar and deep sea equipment. The US Navy maintains a sonar testing facility in the middle of the lake near Dresden. For you avid sportsmen, Seneca Lake is promoted as being the lake trout capitol of the world and hosts the National Lake Trout Derby Memorial Day weekend, and is also home to the largest herd of all white white-tailed deer in existence.
As the tour starts to wind down, we will stop lakeside for a picnic style treat of delicious hour d’oeuvres on the grounds of a Romanesque Revival style castle listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. After this quick bite, we will return home, where you can enjoy a glass of this area’s award winning wine and look forward to a fabulous dinner at a restaurant of your choice.
SundayStarts with a hearty gourmet breakfast prepared by Sharie in her kitchen. Breakfast is served between 7:30 & 9:00. Today’s adventure begins on Skaneateles Lake.
Skaneateles, meaning long lake, is 16 miles long, 1 mile wide, 350 feet deep and holds 425 Billion gallons of water. Skaneateles’s gorgeous blue green color is due to its crystal clear clarity. It is one of the cleanest lakes in the country, so pure in fact, that the city of Syracuse and other municipalities use its water unfiltered. The spectacular color of this lake will take your breath away.
On this day, you will get a glimpse at the DEEPEST Salt Mine in North America. About 550 million years ago, the entire Finger Lakes region was under a shallow salt water sea. What was left behind is a bed of salt that stretches from Lake Erie, north to Ontario Canada and south through Pennsylvania. The Cargill Salt Mine operates 2400 feet below Cayuga Lake and covers about 18,000 subterranean acres. It produces about 10,000 tons of salt per day.
Further along our journey, we will visit the historic little town of Aurora. A must see in the area, Mackenzie Childs, is on the grounds of a former 75 acre dairy farm overlooking Cayuga Lake. They are renown for their colorful handmade ceramics, enamelware, glassware and home accents. Stretch your legs and enjoy this picturesque farm, home to a herd of Scottish Highland cattle, exotic birds and spectacular and ever changing gardens. From Mackenzie Childs, we will meander over to Owasco Lake.
Owasco, meaning crossing place is the 6th largest and 3rd easternmost finger lake. It is 11 miles long, 1 mile wide, 177 feet deep and holds 212 Billion gallons of water. Because Owasco is smaller and shallower than some of the other lakes, its waters warm up quicker, making swimming, water skiing and boating popular. Owasco is an excellent recreation spot.
The city of Auburn, cradling its northern end, is filled with numerous historic sites. Here you will find the Seward House, home of William Seward, the former New York State Governor, and President Lincoln’s Secretary of State. He is credited for purchasing Alaska for a few cents per acre from Russia in 1867, otherwise known as Seward’s Folly. Also in Auburn is the former home of Harriet Tubman, the abolitionist leader that helped free the slaves to Canada via the underground railroad and the Willard Memorial Chapel designed by Louis C. Tiffany, just to mention a few.
It is on Owasco Lake that we will enjoy a leisurely lakeside lunch and finish the day where we began, on Skaneateles Lake. We will make a final stop in this charming village for a sweet ice cream treat before heading home for a 5:00 check out.
